Gardens To Health

Garden Teacher Available For Your School!

Have you heard about all the benefits garden-based learning can bring? From better behavior to better test scores, but just don’t have the time or capacity to implement it at your school? If so, I am here to help!

My name is Goyana Ferreira. I am a School and Community Gardening Teacher and Event Coordinator. I work with children Kindergarten to 8th Grade, motivating and teaching them how to grow and harvest the vegetables and food products that sustain us.

I graduated from Antioch University in New Hampshire in 2012 with a Masters Degree in Education. My thesis was focused on the importance of outside play for children’s better emotional, physical and mental health.

I’m writing to you today to introduce my business ‘Gardens to Health.’ Gardens to Health can plan, organize and create garden-based learning activities with your students. Imagine edible gardens providing fresh, healthy, whole food for the good nutrition your students need and also to renew and improve their eating habits, facilitate better social and physical development, improve fitness and well- being.

Our objective is to grow edible gardens where the children will harvest their own school vegetables for their school breakfast green juice in the morning and a salad bar at lunch time. When children plant, care for and harvest vegetables for their school and community, they are learning many important lessons about their health, patience, how things grow and mature, and even about entrepreneurship. Also, edible gardens inspire healthy eating, and connect children to nature and to where food comes from.

This is a precious gift not only for children, but for their families as well. After serving the school, the children may bring some produce home or sell it to the school community. This program supports academic curricula, as teachers from different areas may become engaged. All teachers interested can be part of the program as art, science, math, language arts, geography, history, Spanish, and all others. You can find how your lessons can be integrated. We have examples of schools that are doing this, using a curriculum aligned with US National Standards.

We can add edible gardens to your school’s actual landscape replacing high price lawn maintenance with vegetable garden beds, edible bushes, fruit trees and pollination/ butterfly gardens with focus on biodiversity, pollination and sustainability.Imagine tomatoes, collard greens, mulberry bushes, orange and avocado trees right there by the children’s playground! Florida has the gift of the great warm weather and supports a large variety of edible plants. We can give new life to our school and our children’s health!

Sincerely,

Goyana Ferreira

Why Gardens to Health

Research Shows That Regular Time in Nature, Playing and Moving Can:

  • Facilitate better social and physical development.
  • Improve fitness, motor-skills, and well- being.
  • Support creativity and imaginative play.
  • Inspire collaboration and reduces violence and bullying.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Reduce children obesity.
  • Reduce ADHD.
  • Create feelings of empathy for nature- the first step toward developing the next generation of environmental stewards.

In April 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama planted a kitchen garden on the White House’s South Lawn. As fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs sprouted from the ground, this White House Kitchen Garden inspired a new conversation all across the country about the food we feed our families and the impact it has on the health and well-being of our children. Mrs Obama’s journey continues across the nation as she shares stories of other gardens that have moved and inspired her: Houston office workers who make the side walk bloom; a New York City school that created a scented garden to the visually impaired; a North Caroline garden that devotes its entire harvest to those in need; and other stories of communities that are transforming the lives and health of their citizens. Mrs Obama whote “American Grown”, where she tells the story of the White House Kitchen Garden, celebrates the bounty of gardens across our nation, and reminds us all of what we can grow together.
